It's difficult to pinpoint when my fascination with color began, but my first 64 box of Crayola crayons may have contributed to it. With names like Lemon Yellow, Sea Green, and Midnight Blue, I was hooked not only on the actual colors themselves, but also by the creative spark I felt when reading the enticingly descriptive names.
The Head Crayon Namer position at Crayola never panned out, so I turned to oil paint and fine-tuned my eye for color while earning a BFA in painting from the University of Washington. I am still inspired every time I glimpse an unexpected shot of color in my daily life and I hope that my jewelry can provide a similar feeling of wonder for those who wear it. For me, creating jewelry is the perfect medium in which to capture fresh, vibrant and modern combinations of color and texture.
Because I find the colors in limited vintage materials so delectable, many of my pieces are made in small numbers or are one of a kind. This not only makes each piece of my jewelry unique, but it also allows me to consistently focus on exploring new directions for future pieces.
Crayons are still a big part of my life now that my husband and I have a creative preschooler who loves to color outside the lines, on walls or anywhere else for that matter. I doubt I’ll be applying for the Head Crayon Namer job anytime soon, so for now designing my jewelry and chasing my daughter keeps me plenty busy.
